My friends know that I translate a poem by Rabindranath Tagore every year on Tagore's birthday. I have been doing this since 2006, the year I started this blog. I recently realized that there was no easy way to find all of these translations in one place, and so here's a list of all that I have translated over the years.
- Poems
- The River (This is my first translation, done when I was an undergrad)
- The Palm Tree
- The Two Birds
- The Hero
- The Poet's Age
- Africa
- Judgment
- Identity
- Small and Big
- The Schoolmaster
- Strange Ambitions
- The Right Place
- The Poet

Compromise
~ Rabindranath Tagore
Today, tell your mind this,
Whatever comes, good or bad,
Accept the truth with ease.
Some people may love you
Others are never meant to,
Some are ever grateful, others
Don’t owe a cent to you.
Some of it is their nature
Some of it is yours, brother,
Partly, the way of this world ---
Not each one suits the other.
Some will bluff you at times,
At other times, you will bluff,
You will get your share,
Others get the remaining stuff.
From times immemorial
That’s how things have worked
How can you be so lucky that
You’ll get through unmarked!
Today, tell your mind this,
Good or bad whatever may come
Accept the truth with ease.
Weathering many a storm you reach
The port of happiness to rest
An underwater hidden cliff
Strikes you inside the chest,
Instantly your weary ribs
Tremble with a painful creak---
Does that mean with everyone
A deathly quarrel you must seek?
If you can stay afloat
That’s the best thing to do,
If you cannot, then quietly
Sink without much ado.
That wouldn’t be unusual,
It’s a common incident ---
Where people don’t fear
Shipwrecks are most frequent.
So tell your mind this,
Whatever comes, good or bad,
Accept the truth with ease.
Not everyone is sized for you
Nor you made in everyone’s size,
You seem to die of someone’s shove
By your squeeze, someone dies---
Still, if we think it through,
Over everything must we vie?
The proper approach can give
A lot of happiness if you try.
The sky remains as blue as ever,
Sweet seems the light of dawn,
When death arrives, we find
Better to live than to be gone.
For those whom we closed our eyes
And cried out a tearful sea
Even without them we find
The world is pretty good to see.
So tell your mind this,
Whatever comes, good or bad,
Accept the truth with ease.
At the sunset if you sit,
Let your large shadow loom
And with your own fault
Fill your life with gloom,
If fate you choose to fight
And dig yourself a grave,
Then please finish this task
As soon as you can, we crave.
Weep a while if you must
Filling pitchers from your eyes,
With your mind then somehow
Brother, compromise.
Then, in your dark chamber
A lamp you must shine---
Forget, brother, with whom
Your ideas don’t align.
So tell your mind this,
Whatever comes, good or bad,
Accept the truth with ease.

Dear Gautam Ji -- Sir! Namaskar .
ReplyDelete# I feel thankful to you for having sent your son's English composition of Tagore's Bengali poem " COMPROMISE".
# I enjoyed reading this little poem & went through it several times enjoying the beauty of the lyrical content.
The verses were well crafted in sheer simplicity of words & the meaning
there of was very deep & profound.
The beat, the rhythm, the tone & tenor of each verse was simply beautiful, precise, meaningful & touching.
# I must congratulate SUGATA for the brilliant effort in making the Bengali poem so real & give an impression of being an original piece in the English
language. I wish he continues to Re compose Tagore's poems as he himself matures in life's experiences.
# Having been inspired by Sugata's effort, I was motivated to make a humble effort to capture the theme & the central thread of Tagore's COMPROMISE
with life. I have written these verses as I understood life through Tagore's mind.
I must confess, my verses have no literary merit nor are of any worth& value, but I have attempted to piece together my scattered random thoughts...
I wonder , how successful I have been in putting across my feelings, & if I
have been able to capture the essence of his thought process..
*********
YOU MAY FORWARD THE POEM TO SUGATA as MY APPRECIATION FOR HIS
COMMENDABLE EFFORT.

COMPROMISE !! ( INSPIRED by Rabindranath Tagore's poem )
------------
Oh! traveler; in Seeking enlightenment, speak the truth,
Spread not canard and lies,
What ever you do, be wise,
Your word; friends or foe may accept,
Could be, they may doubt and suspect,
Fail not to see their point of view,
As they have their liberty too,
Then in the bargain,
Strike a situation Win Win,
After all in this world to compromise is no sin.
-----------
At sea amidst the rising storm, panic not... think,
One may sail through, while another into the ocean may sink,
Weather the storm with grit & courage happily,
Having survived, gloat not and rejoice merrily,
Storms keep coming, raging repeatedly at high sea,
face the challenge of the winds, the rising waves to sail free,
With natures fury, struggle to strike a balanced situation,
Grin and bear the hardships to arrive at a goal Win Win,
All said and done to compromise in this world is no big Sin.
-----------
At life's end what ever may be your worth,
At your door come knocking the demons of death,
The human spirit, the body, and soul,
need to pay their life's sinful toll,
No amount of prayers and tears,
Can wash away the sorrows & the fears,
Every one has to undergo this pain
As there is no situation here to gain,
Here one can not carve out a situation Win Win ,
After all to compromise and surrender to death is no sin.
---------
Behind the mountain, the fiery ball turns pale and goes down,
Losing it's glory, it slips into the dark without it's golden crown,
All salute the rising sun, but none is there to see it set,
Death ends life, the mortal frame in the soil is laid to rest,
Tears fill the mourners eyes, the heart is torn asunder,
Death conquers life, the soul is left kneeling in abject surrender,
Ghouse! nothing is left, all is calm , there is nothing except grief & tears,
One must continue to live with hope, weep not but dispel all fears,
There is no situation left, no craft to lighten the sorrow; either to loose or win,
One must live on, with the pain of parting despite the confusion and din,,
After all to compromise with death in life, it's no GREAT SIN !!!
