Firstly, let us understand something: Slumdog Millionaire is not an Indian movie. It is a British movie filmed in India.
That said, I did not talk about the spirit that hit you because that spirit is there in every single rags-to-riches story ever made into a film. And there have been quite a few!
Two brothers, going through misfortunes, separated in childhood, ending up on different sides of the law - in the end the bad one gives his life saving the good one - this formula has been "done to death" in Bollywood films of the 70s. I am not watching a real-life story here, it's a movie. And in a movie, I expect something unpredictable to happen. The plot here was so stale, so predictable and so contrived, I did not feel that spirit separately.

As for my choice of Indian movies, you can pick ANY movie by Satyajit Ray at random - I like all of them. Those are mostly Bengali though. If you want Hindi movies, watch any movie by Hrishikesh Mukherjee - they are the old classics. Watch Sholay - if you prefer action. Watch Golmaal, if you prefer comedy. In recent movies, you can watch Lagaan, Black Friday, Guru, Khosla ka Ghosla, Namesake or Taare Zameen Par. The last one actually failed to get nominated for the foreign film category at the Oscars this year, but I'm sure you'll love it.Joy Foreverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12648549085158946686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21963135.post-17825745860034875022009-03-25T15:11:00.000-04:002009-03-25T15:11:00.000-04:00Wow - what a shocker! The triumph of the spirit over all cirumstances.

Sure, the movie was contrived to fit the plot, but why did one brother go one way and the other go to a life of crime? Only the spirit can explain it.

When the boy jumps into the outhouse holding up the picture of his hero - that was the highlight for me. I couldn't believe he went under! But the boy's passion meant he would go through anything to fulfill his heart's desire! There aren't many like that, most people settle.

In the end, he even inspired his brother and the girl to change.

It's a story of the power of the spirit. You didn't mention that at all in your review so I guess it didn't hit you the same way. I've never been to India so maybe that made a difference.

I would love to know what your top Indian movies are - so I can see what impresses you - and some more good movies.

Respectfully,
ArunaYoung Yoga Mastershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10249288320846995155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21963135.post-37847182033537187802009-03-25T15:10:00.000-04:002009-03-25T15:10:00.000-04:00Wow - what a shocker!
